How to write a restaurant shift brief that workers can act on

A useful shift post answers the questions a worker needs to make a confident decision. Clear details also give your on-site team a shared plan when a new person arrives. Here is a practical brief you can adapt for a dishwasher or waiter shift.

Start with the role and the real shift window

Name the role clearly: dishwasher or waiter. State the date and start and end time, including enough time for handover and closing duties where relevant. Avoid a vague “evening shift” description. If the finish time may change, explain that before a worker accepts.

Make the arrival instructions easy to follow

Include the full work address, the correct entrance and where the worker should report. Name an on-site point of contact or a job title such as duty manager. Explain whether there is a staff entrance, a security desk or a short sign-in process. Keep personal information out of public descriptions when an account message is more appropriate.

Describe the actual work

For a dishwasher, explain whether the shift involves sorting, operating a commercial machine, putting away clean items or end-of-shift cleanup. For a waiter, explain the service style and assigned section. Identify tasks requiring specific training so that a worker does not discover a new requirement on arrival.

Be clear about clothing, equipment and the rate

State the dress requirements and what the venue provides. Show the applicable rate in the shift and check any billing details in your account. Do not assume a worker knows your uniform rules or the location of changing facilities. Follow your workplace procedures for induction and required equipment.

Use this copy-and-fill template

Role: [dishwasher / waiter]. Date: [date]. Hours: [start–finish]. Location: [address and entrance]. Duties: [three specific tasks]. Rate: [rate shown in the platform]. Clothing: [requirements]. Report to: [role/contact through the appropriate channel]. Arrival: [instructions]. Experience: [role-specific requirements].

Confirm assignment and brief the team

A posted shift is not the same as a confirmed assignment. Check the platform status, share the plan with the person supervising the shift and prepare a short arrival briefing. Keep changes in the appropriate account channel so everyone works from the same information.
