Your first dishwasher or waiter shift: a practical preparation checklist

A smooth first shift starts before you reach the venue. Review the details carefully, plan your journey and ask about anything you do not understand before accepting the work. This checklist helps you arrive ready to join the team.

Review the shift before you accept

Check the role, date, hours, location, rate and listed duties. Consider the full journey, including the trip home after a late finish. Accept only work you can attend and perform. If the shift asks for experience or qualifications you do not have, contact the team rather than assuming it will be fine.

Prepare your clothing and arrival plan

Follow the venue’s stated dress and footwear requirements. Check the entrance and reporting instructions. Leave enough travel time to arrive for the scheduled start. Use the platform or the stated contact channel for any delay or question; avoid leaving a business waiting without an update.

Ask for a short workplace briefing

On arrival, find the person supervising you. Ask about the duties, work area, break arrangements and how to report a problem. Follow the venue’s induction, hygiene and safety procedures. Ask before using equipment or chemicals you have not been shown how to use.

Work from the team’s priorities

For dishwashing, agree how dirty items arrive and where clean items belong. For waiter shifts, understand your section, service sequence and who handles guest questions. If priorities change during service, confirm them with the supervisor. Clear communication is more useful than guessing.

Finish with a proper handover

Before leaving, check the agreed finishing duties and how your hours are recorded. Tell the supervisor about any unfinished task. Review your account for the completion and payment information, and contact support through the proper channel if there is a discrepancy.

Keep sensitive information in the right channel

Submit verification documents only through the designated account process. Do not put identity documents, passwords or payment details into a general contact form. Read the platform’s terms and privacy information as part of registration.
